Datatype problem: development vs production servers

This is driving me nuts: On my development machine the code runs finebut generates an error on the production server. Both are running SQLServer 2000 and ASP.NET 1.1

The datatype of the field in question isdatetime.
The webform has a calendar for a user to select and automaticallyinsert the date into the textbox. The update command in the webform is:
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@.citation_date", CDate(txtDate.Text))

This works without a hitch on my development system, but on the production server it generates the following error:
Cast from string "19-12-1997" to type 'Date' is not valid.

WHY?Sad [:(]
It has to do with the locale information (country, language, etc.) for the computer. Check to make sure the server is set to whatever you're using on your local development PC. I'm not familiar with setting/changing these since I only use U.S. format and English.|||

You are right. I'm inputting U.S format of date for the time being until I've figured a way around it. Thanks!|||Use YYYY-MM-DD format, then it doesn't matter what culture you are in.

Datacenter move.. Plan for SQL Servers

We will be moving to a new datacenter and wondering if there was any article
out there to help me get started on the planning required..
Thanks
This should be no difference than planning to move an instance/database to
another server, assuming you are going to a new server in the new datacenter.

Databse replication

Dear All

I've made transactional replication between two SQL 2005 servers.
Everything looks fine, synchronization working fine, no errors, however size of replicated database file = 97 Mb,
on Publications server the database file size = 184 Mb.

What is wrong :S ?

Best Regards
PiotrMB?

You should be using Access|||Sounds like the equivalent of shrinking to me...|||Sounds like the equivalent of shrinking to me...

It's funny you talk about shrinkage, and your name is George|||The data on the replicated server has been defragmented. behind the scenes, the snapshot bcp's out the data from the publisher, and bcp's it in to the subscriber. This removes any whitespace created by deletes and page splits.|||That's a much more elegant way of putting it...
I had the whole "Ya know when you defrag your PC..." conversation knocking about in my head.

Databse Link will not connect

I have a couple new servers - Windows 2003 R2 - with SQL Server 2000
SP4 installed. They are all Active/Active clustered instances (my
first ones).

I am trying to create database links to other SQL Server instances, but
there are 3 that I cannot connect to.

The dblink works if I connect to the instance as "sa", but not as my
Windows Authenticated account. We use Active Directory and I am in the
Administrator group on all of the boxes.

Of the 3 I can't get to, 1 is a cluster (Active/Passive) and the other
2 are just regular Enterprise instances. They are all SQL 2000 SP4.

I have several other instances, all SP4 on 2003 boxes and I can connect
to all of them.

Also, on the instances where the dblink does not work, I can actually
connect to these databases w/in Enterprise Manager successfully.

I am using a different port for the instances, but I have set them up
in the Client Network Utility as well and still can't connect.

I can connect via a dblink TO these new instances from the older boxes
fine.

I'm really stumped - I've had the Network people verify we don't have a
firewall issue or something.

Must be some sort of permissions problem, but I don't know what else to
check - - -

Please help!!

THANK YOU!!Not completely sure what you mean by a dblink, but what SQL permissions
do the Administrators have on each server? Are you sure the
BUILTIN/Administrators Windows group have the appropriate permissions
on the databases you want to select from?

By dblink I am referring to a linked server. (I apologize - I come
from an Oracle background).

The BUILTIN/Administrators group has all of the System Roles and it
still did not work.
Other boxes have links into the server/instance which work fine, and
the new server can link to other servers.
It's strange because it's just this one combination that does not work.

Group A: oldest servers; non-clustered; Win 2003 SP1

Group B: medium servers; 1 a/p cluster; 2 non-clustered; Win 2003 SP1

Group C: newest servers; 3 a/a clusters; Win 2003 R2

All SQL Server 2000 SP4

Group A can link to Group B
Group A can link to Group C
Group B can link to Group A
Group B can link to Group C
Group C can link to Group A
Group C CANNOT link to Group A if logged in using Windows
Authentication

All of the links are set up using "sa".

|||Thanks -

we're not double-hopping.

If you go to Enterprise Manager, under Security there is "Linked
Servers".

If I am on one of the boxes in Group C, I am unable to open the link to
any of the instances in Group B if I am logged into the instance using
Windows Authentication. (Sorry I had a typo in the last message).

I've recently discovered that if I change the port back to 1433, the
database link will work. However, I am uncomfortable going back to the
default port.
All of my other links work fine.

Also, the servers in Group C are using 64-bit Windows (but 32-bit SQL).

thanks,
tc

Databases with different collation

Hi group,
we have databases now residing on different servers or instances with
different collations. We are considering bringing the databases on the same
server, keeping their respective collation.
Some of our applications access databases with different collations. We
have been using linked server and specifying "Use remote collation" (or
not). But when putting the DBs with different collation on the same server,
you loss this feature. To go over all the applications and specify the
collation on the query statement level is of course too big a task. Is
there a way to do such a blanket declaration on the database level?
Your responses are greatly appreciated.
Quentin
Quentin,
Have you tried using ALTER DATABASE...COLLATE command?
Thanks.

Databases per Server

All,

I have 2 web applications running on 2 W2K servers. Each server has a local SQL server(2000). We are about to upgrade the servers to Windows 2003. The web applications are running classic ASP and VB COM+ objects. We are going to take the opportunity to seperate SQL from the web server. What will end up with is 2 web servers running the applications and a single database server with 2 databases servering up the data. We will upgrade the SQL2K to SQL2K5.

My question is how will the SQL performance be affected? What's the best place to locate the COM+ objects? What kind of pitfalls do I need to be aware of?

Thanks

BB

Make sure that the consolidated box has suitable hardware to support both apps (memory, disks, processors). Also, remember that now the a failure of the SQL Server will bring down both while if one database starts hogging resources, the other would be adversely affected. Similarly you'll only have one set of system databases so make sure that tempdb is on a fast set of disks.

Certainly one area you may need to check any conflicts arising from any SQL Server configurations that may differ on the current boxes and also any login conflicts. Remember, also that future patches will be applied at the server level and both apps will need to be able to run on the same SQL version.

You are able to run multiple instances on one box which would allow you to allocate resources better to each application or could consider virtual servers which is becoming more and more popular these days.

Great advice - thanks!

What about the increase in network traffic. Is there something to do hardware wise? Like adding a second NIC card? Will that even make a difference?

Thanks

Databases in Remote Servers

Hello,

This is my first post, and i am looking for help about Databases in remote servers.

This is my problem:

1) I have a free account in "HostBasket", with 50 mb of space, and 10 mb of SQL Server... with ASP.NET 2 support --> http://www.hostbasket.com/dotnet2.shtml?LinkFrom=10060

2) They gave me this info for the database:

Your SQL Server: sql15.hostbasket.com
Your database name: myDatabaseName
Your loginfor the database: myLogin
Your passwordfor the database: myPassword

Connectionstring for ASP.NET (using ADO.NET with System.Data.SqlClientnamespace):

Persist Security Info=True;User ID=myLogin;Password=myPassword;Initial Catalog=MyDatabaseName;Data Source=sql15.hostbasket.com

3) Actually, i don't know what to do with that info... I mean, i have read so much info, and all people saying "their way" to do things... oh, I am so confused...

4) I read in a website, this: "the database can be uploaded as a FILE saved in the App_Data folder, under the .mdf extension"

I read that from : http://dotnetjunkies.com/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx

5) In the url given above, there is a "step by step" example... i follow it, exactly (i start a asp.net website, i create the database and the table, i show the data with the grids, etc )

6) All is OK until here, i mean, when i run the website with VWD, it shows me the info OK.

7) But... ?How can i do this works on the Remote Server i described in 1) and 2) ?

I know how to upload my website, in fact i uploaded a very basic one, and all was OK, but when i work with databases starts my problem...

So, i am almost sure, that i have an error in the "Conecction String"...

connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\MiBaseDeDatos.mdf;
Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"

?How should it be, to work with my free remote server?

or,

if you have done the "easy way" of uploading the .MDF file in the server (but a server different of mine) please, tell me the "how to..." (and the server you used :p )

-------

Ok guys, i am a Chilean young (i dont speak english very well) and i tried to write my ideas in an easy way, so I REALLY HOPE you can help me.

I am a New (very new) on this (vwd , .net , asp.net ) in fact, i am using this just 3 days ago...

THANK YOU SO MUCH,

Carlos,
La Serena, Chile.

Do you know which version of the SQL server hostbasket is using?

1> I am not sure whether you can connect to the datbase and sql server (sql15.hostbasket.com) during your development. So you still can use what you are using for your development.

2> But when you upload your site to hostbasket, you want your site use the database/sqlserver they have provided you rather than you data file.

To take advantage of the database/sql server that is provided you, here are something you need to do:

1> define two connection strings in you web.config file and give them the same name, e.x.:

<

connectionStrings>

<!-- Dev-->

<addname="myDB"connectionString="Server=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=MyDataBase"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

<!-- Prod-->

<!--

<add name="myDB" connectionString="Data Source=sql15.hostbasket.com; UID=myLogin; PWD=mypassword; Initial Catalog=mydatabase;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

-->

</

connectionStrings>

In this example, I have defined two database connection strings with the same name. One is for development environment, and the other one is for production. When I move the website to the production, I will comment out the DEV string and uncomment the PROD string.

2> Then in the code, whenever I need to reference my connection string, I will simply read it out from the web.config:

stringconnStr =ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["myDB"].ConnectionString;

3> When you move your web site to the production(hostbasket.com), you also need to move what ever you have done in your database to the production (your database on sql15.hostbasket.com).

This should make your web site runs smoothly in the production.

Hope this helps. If you have any confusions, please let me know.

|||Hello chunshahab,thank you SO MUCH for the reply :)

I have understood all what you say, but i have some questions still...

let's start:

- According what i understood you, i have "two ways" for working with databases:
a) Uploading the .MDF database created on App_Data folder
b) UPDATING the database that they GAVE ME (sql15.hostbasket.com)

I want to use any way (the first that works OK, hehehe...)

- I understood what you said about the two connection strings, thanks for the tip ;)

- QUESTION: you said i have to move my website to the production (hostbasket.com), and that i have to move what ever i did in my local databaseTO the production (my database on sql15.hostbasket.com) ...BUT How can i do that ??

Because there is no option like "upload your database" in the control panel of my hostbasket account...

- I read somewhere that i need a "sql client" and i tried SquirreL but i actually don't understand it... so the database on the server is still empty ^^U

So, please, tell me how to "update" the database they gave me (sql15.hostbasket.com)

Thank you so much, really...

Carlos.

Postdata: i don't know what version of SQL server they have... they just promote this"ASP.net 2.0Beta 2"

Postdata 2: I am working with VWD Express 2005

|||

Yes. You need a SQL Client to connect to your database server and update your database.

You can download a free version ofSQL Server Management StudioExpress (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en) and use it to connect to your database server.

I know you can use it to connect to any edition of SQL Sever 2005. I have not tried to see whether it can connect to SQL Server 2000 or earlier. Check with hostbasket and ask them which version of SQL serve rthey are using.

Once you can connect to your database, they you can run the scripts to generate the tables, stored procedures which you have created with your database file.

|||Thanks again,

I am downloading the 40 MBs right now...

I have a new Question:

- I have created my table with Visual Web Designer (yep, while i am developing the web site) ...

?there is a way to create automatically the script, according the changes i have made in my database? ( i hope you understand what i said... my english is not so good)

--> I mean, if i created the database and the tables in a "using mouse way", and then create the script automatically without i have to be writting "create table, insert xxx, etc"

Thanks|||Chunshahab:

Thanks for All your help , now i can access the database on the remote server, see the info, edit it, etc.

THANKS,
Carlos.|||

Carlos,

Glad everything worked out for you. What is version of hostbasket's SQL server? Can you use the SQL Server Management Studio connect to it?

Have a great week.

|||Hello,

sorry i missed this post ^^U

I don't know about the version of SQL server in hostbasket, but it works 100% ok with me (using .net 2.0 )

And i connected to the database on hostbasket through SQL Server Management Studio, and all was 100% OK.

Thanks again,

Carlos.

I can't help you with the Arcserve problem, but I'd like to suggest
STRONGLY that you not perform your database backups using an agent like
this. Do your database backups using the native SQL BACKUP command,
backing up your data to a file on disk. Use Arcserve to backup that
disk file. These agent-based database backups tend to be not the most
reliable things.

Databases can only be backed up locally?

Dear all,
I have two windows 2003 servers, one is running arcserve 11.1 with sp2, the
other is running MSSQL 2000 with SP4 with SAP application.
I have already installed the client agnet and sql agnet 11.1 sp2 to the SQL
server.
However whenever I backup the SQL database arcserve will give me the Error 1
326 saying that the username/password is incorrect.
I can browse thru the tree in arcserve manager and I can backup other file o
n the sql server with no problem.
Then I tried to install the arcserve manager to the sql server and tried to
backup the sql database with exactly the same username and password, it work
s!
I confirm that there is no blocking for any network traffic between two serv
er.
